This piece shows the invisible ties binding me to Bermuda. As I prepare for university, I feel more and more overwhelmed by the transition, anchored to memories that define who I am.
The figure in the painting is submerged (literally and metaphorically) in deep waters that symbolizes my relationship with Bermuda. The water conveys a sense of comfort that is inescapable – no matter where I drift – I’ll always be Bermudian.
I wanted this piece to feel empty to a degree as it addresses the feelings of uncertainty I face as I’m preparing for a new chapter in my life. I chose a range of blues and greens to show the water’s depth and I blended the brushstrokes to show calmness in the water – to symbolize both comfort and surrender. I left some areas of the water vague to show how vast the open ocean is showing that true belonging is often beyond the surface. I’ve never thought of Bermuda as anything other than home. It’s shared experiences like these and love for this island that defines a Bermudian. This connection cannot be seen but will always be felt.
