While creating my art piece, I intended to show the things that represent me. I chose to use alcohol markers because they allowed me to use vibrant colors in a way that made the Barbados flag stand out and more eye-catching. As I worked on drawing the Bermuda island, I thought to myself, how could I incorporate the Barbados flag into this and fit the “Hamilton” (An American Musical) behind the silhouette of the island, which helped me plan out the overall message of the piece. While I was in the process of drawing this piece, I felt very in touch with my heritage and my interests, and that energy influenced what I had drawn on that piece of paper. The “Hamilton” reference, with the lyrics from two songs from the musical and the microphone in one of the lyric bubbles and the bar with music notes, shows my love for musicals, theatre, singing, playing instruments, and performing. The island outline and flag represent the places I come from, while the crochet yarn and hook symbolize my creativity across different forms. As for the background, I colored it blue to also represent Bermuda and its beaches. At the end of the day, I hope that everyone who views my artwork can recognize how much these things mean to me and feel the warmth I aim to share with the world.
